After studying “The Block” a famous six panel collage in which Bearden depicts a typical Harlem block, students created their own blocks in the style of Bearden. This is Stellaluna. After hearing the story and looking at the pictures of the book Stellaluna, the third grade students at Wheeler each made a bat. Stellaluna is a story about a bat who ends up in a birds nest. A story much like The Ugly Duckling. Stellaluna and the baby birds compare and contrast the way they each live.
In Howell Road School, our third grade classes experienced the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. We looked one of his most famous works, “The Starry Night” and made artwork with water-colors, craypas and colored paper.
