Clarissa Harlowe Barton

WHY I CHOSE THIS PERSON?
I chose Clara Barton as my research project because my mom had recommended her to me. I also wanted to know how the “Red Cross” started, and Clara Barton was one of the first nurses to do it.

WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU AND OTHERS?
Without Clara Barton, we might have lost the Victims War. She saved billions and billions of soldiers. She started a few schools in NJ, and as a teacher, she helped student act mature.

CHILDHOOD (birth, parents, siblings, important events that impacted them as a child)
Clara Barton’s birthday was on a Christmas Day, so she hadn’t gotten a big celebration just for HER birthday. She had 4 other brothers and sisters. She was very lonely when she was a child. She lived on a farm, so there was no neighbors L Her 2 older sisters taught her how to read before she was old enough to go to school. One of Clara’s brothers was a math teacher; so he taught her how to learn math. Her brother, David, was a big help too. He taught her to cook and sew. And the local doctor taught her to nurse David after a terrible accident. Clara was a smart, but shy, so her parents sent her to boarding school when she was 4!!! She was too sad and lonely, so she went back home happily J , and started school normally.

ADULTHOOD (who influenced them, achievements and disappointments, important events such as marriage or having children)
All her childhood lessons were useful later on, - though some of them in unexpected ways. Her nursing experience helped her become the most famous nurse of the Civil War. Her skill as a cook made her popular with the soldiers, and her fearless horseback riding helped her escape the enemy.
