Student name: Nicole =D
Person whom I have selected: Marie Curie
I chose this person because I have heard of her but I knew nothing about her and I wanted to do a woman because around her time women didn’t have their rights and around her time for a woman she accomplished a lot.
Why are they important to you and others?
She is important to me because she was a really amazing person. Around her time, women didn’t have their rights, but she still was able to get a college education and she was the first woman ever to win the Nobel Prize.
Childhood (birth, parents, siblings, important events that impacted them as a child)
When she was born, her name was Maria Sklodoska. She was born on November 7th, 1867, in Warsaw, which was the city that at one time was the capital of Poland. Her friends and family gave her the nickname of “Manya”. She had four other siblings: Zosia, Jozef, Bronya, and Hela. Her parents, Bronislawa and Vladislav Sklodoska, raised her to be a polish patriot. When Maria was born, Poland was not an independent country. It had been divided up by Austria, Prussia, and Russia. When Maria was born, her mother resigned from the position as the head of a school, and became a math and physics teacher at a boy’s high school. When Maria was only 8, her oldest sister, Zosia, died of typhus. Only 2 years later, when she was 10, her mother died of T.B (tuberculosis).
Adulthood (who influenced them, achievements and disappointments, important events such as marriage or having children)
In 1891 she traveled from Warsaw, Poland to Paris, France. She went to Paris so she could go to college at Sorbonne University. She registered herself as Marie, which was the French form of the name “Maria”. Maria completed a master’s degree in math and physics in three years. Living on her own for the very first time, she became so involved in her studies that she sometimes forgot to eat. She needed a lab to do her job, so she shared one with a man named Pierre Curie. Pierre was about 10 years older then Marie. In July of 1895, Marie and Pierre Curie were married. 2 years later Marie gave birth to her first daughter, Irene. A year before Irene was born, in 1896; Marie and Pierre were awarded a Nobel Prize. In 1904, she gave birth to her 2nd daughter, Eve. 2 years later, on April 19th, 1906, Pierre was on his way home and since it was raining, he slipped and fell in front of a heavy horse drawn wagon. The wagon ran over his head and killed him. On July 4th 1934, Marie Curie died at the age of 76 of aplastic anemia, which is a blood disease.
Contributions to the world (How did they impact the lives around them and how we live today)
Marie and Pierre discovered radium and polonium. They were both radioactive. While they were using and experimenting with it, Pierre discovered that radium could damage living skin. That opened up a new way to treat cancer and other diseases and aliments.
How did learning about this person help you and how did it make you feel?
Learning about Marie Curie made me feel kind of sad for her because a lot of people who were important to her died, but also happy for her because of all the things she achieved, like the discovery of radium and winning a Nobel Prize.
Would you recommend learning about this person to someone else and why?
I would absolutely recommend learning about this person because she was an amazing and fascinating person and she’s really interesting to learn about. She is a really inspirational woman.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The End!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
