WHY I CHOSE THIS PERSON? OPINION
I chose Mae Jemison because she is an interesting person who has definitely accomplished many of her goals and also because is an African American women
I can look up to.
WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU AND OTHERS? FACT AND OPINION
Mae Jemison is important to me and others because she was the fist African American women to land on the moon and she shows many people, such as me, that anything’s possible.
CHILDHOOD FACTS
Mae Carol Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama on October 17, 1956. Mae had two siblings and she was the youngest of all. At three Mae moved to Chicago, Illinois with her siblings and parents, Charlie and Dorothy. Even if Mae was born in Alabama she considers Chicago to be her hometown. From Mae’s childhood she’s been interested in anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, which her uncle had introduced to her at a very early age.
ADULTHOOD FACTS
In Mae Jemison’s adulthood she had many recreational interests such as traveling,
photography, sewing, skiing, graphic arts and speaks three different languages besides
English such as Russian, Swahili, and Japanese. Mae graduated from Morgan Park High
School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1993. Mae has received many degrees, for example,
Mae has received a doctorate degree in medicine form Cornell University in 1981.
NASA selected Mae astronaut training in 1982. Dr. Mae Jemison finished her training
as being a mission specialist with NASA 1988. In 1992 in the month of September,
when Mae was on board the shuttle ENDEAVER, and became the first African American
woman to explore space. In 1993 Mae departed from NASA and in the same year she appeared
on “Star Trek: The First Generation”. Currently Mae is focusing on increasing the
healthcare in Africa and other countries. Mae Jemison is now a college professor

Learning about Mae Jemison helped me because I now realize another thing I would like to be…an astronaut! It also helped me believe that anything’s possible even if no one has ever done it before.

Yes! I would definitely recommend learning about Mae Jemison. I would recommend learning about her because she made world history and learning about someone who made world history is so awesome! She made world history when she went into space and when she did this; she became the first African American women to enter space.
