Student Name: Elizabeth J

Person Whom I have selected: Anne Frank

Why did I choose this person? Opinion

I chose Anne Frank because I think that Anne was an amazing young girl who survived a lot. Even though she died in a Nazi concentration camp, she was always strong, and that’s what matters. Anne was a great person.

Why are they important to you and others? Fact and opinion

Anne Frank is important to me because of what she had to live through. To me, the Jewish people were treated like the African Americans were during the time of segregation. Nobody should listen to one man or woman who says that a certain race is bad and believe them. You see, the people in Germany back then just wanted someone to blame for their hardships so they believed Adolph Hitler. No person should have been treated like the Jews were at that time.

Childhood

Anne Frank was born on June 12th, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany as Anneliese Marie Frank. She was the second daughter of Otto and Edith Frank. Their first daughter was Margot Frank. Margot was three years older than Anne. Anne lived in many different places as a child. She lived in Frankfurt am Main, where she was born. In 1933 she lived in Aachen, Germany with her grandmother while she waited for her father to find her family a new home in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Anne’s father found a home for her family in February of 1934.Things eventually got worse for the Jews. All Jews had to wear a star that said Joos, the German word for Jews. No Jewish person could use public transportation. Not even a bike. Her family had a secret annex in the building that her father worked in that she had to hide in when Margot got called to work in a concentration camp after the Nazis took over the Netherlands on July 6th, 1942. Anne had to leave some of her most favored possessions in her old home. One of them was her cat. There were a total of eight people living in the annex which made it very cramped. Everybody living there had to be dead quiet, for fear of being discovered and captured by Adolph Hitler’s army. Towards the end of the war, (in August 1944,) Anne and here family were discovered by somebody and they were arrested. But that was not the end of Anne Frank. She was then brought to a concentration camp in Westerbork the Netherlands. There the people were separated by who was fit to work and who was not. Everyone’s head was shaved there and they were prone for disease. The conditions there were terrible. They were served meager meals of one piece of stale bread and a little water. After a little while at Westerbork, Anne and her family were transferred to Auschwitz- Birkenau, Poland. Anne and Margot both got scabies, a disease in which you get cuts and lice crawl inside of them. Anne’s mom was separated from her and Margot. She would come and give them spare pieces of bread which helped a little. After that, Anne and Margot were transferred to their last camp in Bergen- Belsen, Germany. There,

Anne met up with a few old friends named Janny and Liejente from Westerbork. There was a barbed wire fence running through the middle of the camp, and the conditions on the other side were supposedly better. One day, someone told Anne that a girl who she knew was in the other camp, and she wanted to meet Anne at the border which was the wire fence. Anne went, even though she knew that the guards might shoot her for doing it. There she saw Lies, her old best friend from when she was little. Lies told her to meet her tomorrow and she would bring her food. The next night, Lies threw a package over the fence and another woman caught it. Then, the next night, Anne caught the package of food, but it was the last time Lies and Anne ever saw each other. When Anne went back to her bunk, she found out that Margot was in the sick bay with dysentery. Anne decided to go with her. She was told by Liejente not to, but Anne went anyway. The sick bay was warm, and there were only two in one bunk. Anne said “We are together and we have our peace. Margot didn’t really say much. Her mind was wandering and she had a fever. But she smiled a little. Then, that March, a different disease spread through the camp. It was Typhus. Both Anne and Margot were diagnosed with it. One night Margot fell from the bunk. The shock killed her since she was too weak. Soon, Anne gave into the illness and was dead sometime in March.

Adulthood

Anne Frank unfortunately did not survive Typhus so she never reached                 adulthood. I am sure if Anne did live to be an adult though, she would have been a great woman. Anne and many others lived a very hard life.

Contributions to the world

Anne Frank made a pretty big contribution to the world. Her diary. In 1947, Anne’s diary was published. Then, everybody finally knew what life was like in hiding. They finally knew how horrible the conditions were and how brave you had to be to live in them. Thousands of people now realize how bad their lives could be, and how lucky they are to have a good life. It is amazing how Anne was able to live in those conditions. I think her diary was an amazing contribution.

How did learning about this person help you and how did it make you feel?

Learning about Anne Frank made me stop and think about the good things in life. Anne had to live in a small, secret annex that could not be seen from the street. She also had to be dead quiet. Also, adding to that, she was scared. But, she had her diary. I would never be able to live in the annex like she did.

Would you recommend learning about this person to someone else? Why?

I would recommend learning about Anne to a lot of people because she lived through a lot and I think learning about her would help them in a lot of ways. She was a person who frequently had bad things happen to her. If a person reads about her, the will most likely remember the good things in life.
