Superintendent's Message

May 2012

Dear Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen Families and Community,

It is hard to believe that we have reached the month of May. Now that our students have completed the New York State Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics, it is time to celebrate the components of the well-rounded education provided by the Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen District.

On Thursday, April 28, the Valley Stream community celebrated all of our students work at Lights on for Education. What joy it was to see our students’ accomplishments in reading, writing, math, science, research, art, and in their presentation skills. The event provided an opportunity to see the learning experiences our students will have at the Central High School District.

On Friday, April 29, our sixth graders gathered at Memorial Junior High for the Annual Fantastic Four Volleyball Tournament organized by our physical education staff and sponsored by State Senate Majority Leader Skelos and Town Councilman Ambrosino. Our students demonstrated skill and great sports behavior as they cheered their teams and congratulated the winners. A fun time was had by all!

On May 14, we hosted our District Wellness Fair. This was an opportunity for parents and children to come together to learn about ways to have a healthy life. The event took place at Dever at 6:30PM. On May 15, we celebrated our students’ musical talents. Each building had concerts planned.

It’s finally spring. Our students have shared the book, I’m Here, the final book in our Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen District Reads project. The book aligns with our goals for social emotional learning.

In Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen, children come first.

Sincerely,

Adrienne Robb-Fund, Superintendent of Schools

District Launches District Wide Email Notification Service

The District has now implemented a district wide email notification system for parents and community residents called “E-News.”

The District will use E-News to provided updated information regarding school events, meetings and activities. This communication system will also be utilized to inform families and residents about any weather-related school closings or delayed openings.

The first E-News was sent to families whose email is already on file with the district.

Go to the yellow box on the right and follow the directions.

Faculty and Staff Share Their Favorite Books

Earlier this year, the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund asked the faculty to list some favorite books from their childhood. The reason was to encourage students to read and enjoy books their own teachers cherished. The list below is arranged alphabetically. Chapter books, usually for older children, are marked with a “c” to let you know that they are chapter books. Reading time can be a special family time. Share family favorites and read favorite books together.
